Mark Josse first place in the 2019 British Championships Over 50 tournament
The 2019 British Chess Championships were held in Torquay between 27th July and 4th August.
Mark Josse was the standout Surbiton performer as he finished in a three way tie for first place in the
British Over 50 Championship.
Along the way Mark beat a couple of local rivals and Surrey Open team mates, Russell Granat and Phil Brooks, in crucial games that are shown below with
Mark's notes. The game against Russell featured a nice exchange sac to expose the enemy King. The game against Phil, which was in the last round, was a
positional grind in an endgame to secure first place with a score of 5.5/7.
Another noteworthy Surbiton performance was by Steven Jones who came 3rd in the
Blitz with a score of 7/9.
Honourable mentions too for Oliver Gill (6/9 in the Rapidplay) and the following juniors: Ranesh Ratnesan (3.5/5 in the Atkins), Rajeiv Ratnesan
(3.5/5 in the U1900), Joseph Morrison (3/5 in the U100), Sanjit Kumar (4/6 in the U9) and Mathew Johan (3.5/6, also in the U9).
It is nice to see that Surbiton Chess Club continues to makes its mark at the British Chess Championships.
