Surbiton members enjoy success in the 2015 British Championships

The 2015 British Chess Championships were held at Warwick University between 25th July and 8th August.

In the main Championship we had Steven Jones and Koby Kalavannan competing. Steven made a very impressive 7/11 score with a tournament performance rating of ELO 2309. He made 1.5/2 against FM's, drew with IM Jack Rudd and also drew with GM Simon Williams to secure an equal 10th position. Koby made a very creditable 5/11.

The Major Open was a great success for Oliver Gill who came 2nd with 8/11, including a draw against the winner, GM Tamas Fodor and earning himself a qualification place for the main Championship in 2016.

The Weekend Atkins Open event saw Mike Basman take 3rd place with 3.5/5.

Not content with his efforts in the main Championship Steven Jones scored one point more with 8/11 in the Blitz tournament, beating GM Stuart Conquest along the way to an equal 3rd finish.

There was much Surbiton junior interest in the various age limited championships too. Koby Kalavannan, in addition to his exploits in the main adult Championship also secured second place in the U-14 Championship with 5/7 and went one better to win the U-13 Championship with 6/7. Congratulations, Koby!

The Ratnesans brothers, Ranesh and Rajeiv, competed well in the U-12 and U-11 Championships, each making plus scores. Ranesh was equal 4th in the U-12 event with 5/7.

In the U-10, U-9 and U-8 sections the Ratnesan boys' sister, Rahda, made plus scores, including 4/6 in the U-8, coming equal 8th. Radha's U-8 performance was matched by Hari Stewart.

Well done to everyone from Surbiton who competed!
